Careful, objective parole evaluation can reduce recidivism. Risk assessment, testing and individual evaluations are important tools. Prison programs such as anger management and substance abuse – continued education and job training – combined with individual character development, contribute greatly to the successful re-emergence of parolees qualified to reenter society.
Current spotlight: "old law" prisoners in Virginia
This is inmate 11229460, a first time offender who was incarcerated at the age of 19 in 1986 and has been eligible for parole since the late 90s. He earned an Associate of Arts and Science degree, has an exemplary prison record, has held jobs throughout his incarceration, and has developed strength of character and a positive identity – transforming himself from a conflicted youth into a mindful,mature adult. If paroled, he has a home and a job waiting for him.
